What PIP Pays When You're Injured in Oregon

Personal Injury Protection in Oregon pays your medical bills, lost wages, and essential services after a car accident, regardless of who caused the crash.

Adding vehicles to your policy does not multiply your PIP coverage. The limit follows the person injured, not the car they were driving. Understanding this structure matters when you're deciding whether to carry higher limits or coordinate PIP with health insurance across a multi-vehicle household.

Oregon Minimum PIP Limit

This is the floor; carriers offer higher limits, and many households with multiple vehicles choose $25,000 or $50,000 to cover larger medical bills and longer wage-loss periods.

Medical Expenses PIP Covers

PIP pays reasonable and necessary medical expenses incurred within two years of the accident. Covered services include emergency room treatment, hospital stays, surgery, physician visits, physical therapy, prescription medications, and medical equipment like crutches or braces. Oregon PIP also covers chiropractic care, acupuncture, and massage therapy when prescribed by a physician.

PIP does not cover cosmetic procedures unrelated to accident injuries, experimental treatments, or services received more than two years after the accident date. Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless the accident aggravated them, and even then coverage is limited to the aggravation, not the underlying condition.

Lost Wages and Essential Services

Oregon PIP covers more than medical bills. It replaces lost income and pays for services you can no longer perform yourself after an accident.

Self-employed drivers and contract workers qualify if they can document income with tax returns or business records.

Essential services coverage reimburses you for tasks you can no longer perform: housekeeping, lawn care, childcare, grocery shopping. The service must be one you performed yourself before the accident and can no longer do because of your injuries.

Funeral and Death Benefits

The death benefit is a separate payment to surviving family members or the estate, independent of the medical and wage-loss limits.

These benefits apply per person killed in the accident. If two household members die in the same crash, each person's estate receives the funeral and death benefits separately. The death benefit does not reduce the medical or wage-loss coverage available to other injured occupants.

Oregon Uninsured Motorist Rate

14.7%

Nearly 15 percent of Oregon drivers carry no insurance. When an uninsured driver injures you, your PIP pays your medical bills and lost wages immediately, without waiting for the at-fault driver to be identified or sued. PIP is first-party coverage; it pays regardless of fault.

Coordination with Health Insurance

Oregon allows you to exclude PIP medical coverage if you carry qualifying health insurance that covers auto accident injuries with no deductible higher than $500. This exclusion, called a health insurance offset, reduces your premium because the carrier no longer pays medical bills — your health plan does. You still carry PIP for lost wages, essential services, and death benefits, but medical expenses go through your health insurer first.

The offset makes sense for households where every driver has comprehensive health coverage. It does not make sense if your health plan has a high deductible, excludes auto accidents, or requires long pre-authorization periods. Once excluded, you cannot reverse the decision mid-term.

Higher Limits for Multi-Vehicle Households

If the accident requires surgery, physical therapy, and months of follow-up care, the minimum exhausts quickly.

Higher PIP limits cost more, but the premium increase is modest compared to the financial exposure. When you add a second or third vehicle to your policy, review your PIP limit alongside your liability and uninsured motorist coverage. A household with three cars and four drivers faces higher statistical risk of a serious accident than a single-car household; the state minimum may not match that exposure.
